Friends Meeting House
Baltimore, MD
For a Quaker meeting house adjacent to the Friends School in
Baltimore, ABA Architects analyzed site, facility, and program
to expand in three directions. The scope of work included three
additions and interior alterations necessary to bring the facility
into compliance with current life safety and handicap accessibility
codes and to provide an environment conducive to use by people
with chemical and other environmental sensitivities.
Emphasis was placed on scale, natural materials, and preservation
of mature tree specimens. The slight rotation of the volume
of a two-story classroom addition softens the building's
mass and creates a private meditation court.
